About Us
The South Cumbria Musical Festival was founded in 1976 and has grown over the past 46 years into a highly respected and much-anticipated annual event in Ulverston. Known for its high standards, friendly atmosphere, and efficient organisation, the festival attracts competitors and audiences from across Cumbria and beyond.
Most classes at the festival are competitive, but we also offer a selection of non-competitive opportunities for those wishing to perform simply for the joy of it. Each performer has the chance to appear on stage in a beautiful, professional venue with excellent facilities. It’s a truly special experience at this music festival in Ulverston.
The festival offers a diverse and inspiring range of classes in music and speech. Individuals, schools, and groups of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part, gaining invaluable experience performing before an audience.
Competitors receive constructive feedback and advice from our highly regarded adjudicators - many of whom are renowned and international professionals in their field. Their encouragement often inspires performers to continue developing their craft and achieve even greater success.
Numerous bursaries are awarded to help promising performers advance their chosen discipline. In addition, trophies, shields (held for one year), and certificates for first, second, and third places are presented in all classes, celebrating dedication and achievement.
Supporters, families, and members of the public are warmly invited to attend and enjoy the many exceptional performances throughout Festival week. The atmosphere at this Ulverston music festival is always welcoming, inclusive, and inspiring.
To conclude the celebrations, we hold a Gala Concert the week following the Festival, featuring a showcase of standout performers alongside other talented local guest artistes - a highlight of the year in the Ulverston cultural calendar.
The South Cumbria Musical Festival is proudly organised and run by a dedicated voluntary Committee. We are deeply grateful to our festival volunteers, whose hard work and enthusiasm help make each event a success.
If you’d like to volunteer for a festival and play a part in a long-standing Ulverston tradition, we’d love to hear from you. Helping during Festival week is rewarding, fun, and a great way to contribute to your community.
The festival also depends on donations and sponsorships to help cover essential running costs. We appreciate the generous support from local businesses and individuals who contribute each year. You can support us by becoming a Patron, Subscriber, or Class Sponsor, helping to ensure the future of one of Ulverston’s most cherished events.
